About
With over 25 years in the industry, I’ve shaped sound for film and television at every level — dialogue and effects editing, sound design, foley, ADR, and mixing. More recently, I’ve specialized as a sound editor, bringing precision and creativity to every project.
A graduate of Glasgow University’s pioneering BEng course in Electronics and Music, I launched my career at the BBC, before spending seven years as a staff dubbing mixer at ITV. In 2006, I founded Soundmonger Ltd, collaborating with leading UK broadcasters, independent filmmakers, and documentary creators to craft immersive, emotionally compelling soundscapes.
From aspiring filmmakers to Oscar winners, I work seamlessly with every level of talent, always striving to serve the story. Whether it’s perfecting the rhythm of a line of dialogue, finessing the realism of an effect, or making a last-minute promo broadcast-ready, I bring a meticulous attention to detail to every project.
My philosophy on audio for picture is simple:
• Dialogue should flow naturally, maintaining its cadence and musicality.
• Sound effects must not only be heard, but also feel visually authentic.
• If the audience notices my work, I haven’t done my job right.
Sound isn’t just about what you hear — it’s about what you feel. That’s what I bring to every frame.

Testimonials
“JD and I have worked together on two projects which he sound-designed, incorporating Dialogue, Fx, Foley, and BG’s. I then mixed both in Dolby Atmos. He has a vast knowledge of the industry and ProTools. He’s highly competent and his design on both films was excellent, exceeding his directors requests. Great personality too! Let’s work on another one soon JD!!”
Paul Massey – Re-recording mixer : Section 1591
“Theatre of Survival was a special project requiring alot of work, with inherited footage from the 70’s and 80’s, Super 8 & Super 16 and 4K interviews & GVs. As well as impeccable dialogue clean up, JD created the entire spectrum of atmos beds and fx stems to hold the audience in the narrative of the film and prepped them all for the Dolby Atmos mix at TW1. He’s a joy to work with!”
Dan Poole – Director : The Space, Theatre of Survival
“Initially I thought I was having the worst tinnitus attack I’d ever had …”
Audience member, in response to sound design based around tinnitus, for a character’s emotional breakdown : Black Smoke Rising
“It’s always a pleasure working with J.D. At Pitch International we often work under tight time constraints and he is always calm under pressure. His technical understanding is second to none, so any problems faced are quickly overcome. I would recommend him highly.”
Ian Brackley – Head of Production: Pitch International
“Working with JD was as ever a joy. Like a fine tooth comb he trawled through a vast expanse of different recordings, added depth where it was missing and fixed a whole gamut of sound issues that come out of multiple-format shooting over a 6 year period. Not only that but the delivery was exceptional and he’s a joy to work with! Sound design and mixing happiness!”
Giles Terera – Director : Muse of Fire
“I finally watched Treehouse all the way through with your latest sound mix. You changed it into a different movie. I hated this film up until today (a result of seeing it over and over again over the last year) and now I am absolutely proud and loving it … You made such a difference; I can’t thank you enough.”
Michael Bartlet – Director : Treehouse
